SHILLONG/TURA:
Amal Kalita of St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, has secured
the first position in this year’s Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate
(HSSLC), Science examination sharing the top position with Anand Mishra of Don
Bosco College, Tura. In the Commerce stream, Parul Amin Laskar of Umshyrpi
College, Shillong bagged the top position.
Both Amal and Anand secured 454 of the total of 500 with
distinction marks in English, Alternative English, Computer Applications,
Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and acquired.
The Commerce topper, Parul, secured 436 marks of the total
500 with distinction marks in Bengali (MIL), Economics, Accountancy and Business
Studies.
St. Anthony’s bagged a total of eight positions in the
HSSLC Science top ten list while St. Edmund’s College bagged three top
positions while RK Mission Higher Secondary School, Cherrapunjee also found a
berth in the State’s honoured list.
This year’s top ten in Science was shared by two
individuals in three of the positions, namely the first, sixth and ninth berths.
Meanwhile, all top ten positions in the Commerce stream went
to candidates from educational institutions of Shillong.
St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, once again
bagged as many as six positions in the State’s top ten list while St. Edmund’s
College, Shillong secured three berths and one position each went to BBS
College, Shillong and Nongthymmai Nepali Higher Secondary School.
A total of 2041 students passed the Science examination and
the pass percentage was pegged at 66.74 per cent, a huge leap from last year's
59.57 per cent.
Altogether 1628 candidates successfully cleared the Commerce
examination with the overall pass percentage pegged at 71 per cent, a decline of
1.53 per cent compared to last year.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on Thursday, an excited
Amal Kalita, the Science topper, said, "It feels good, all my hard work
paid off and I am extremely overjoyed." He is the son of Sarat Chandra
Kalita and Pranita Kalita and a resident of Survey of India, Malki.
When asked about his preparation for the examination, he said
he did qualitative study not quantitative.
"All that matters is how much dedication you give to
your studies. I studied around 12 to 13 hours a day and I always made sure there
is consistency in the way I study," he added. His future plan is to study
engineering with specialization on Mechanical engineering. In his message
to the other students he said, "Consistency in study is very important and
hard work is the one which will take you very far."
Anand Mishra, who also bagged a top position in the SSLC (Matric)
exams from Sherwood School, Tura two years ago, is the second son of businessman
Bidyasagar Mishra.
"I am elated with the results," a beaming Anand
said while speaking to The Shillong Times on Thursday morning in Tura.
While his elder sister is pursuing a medical degree and younger brother is
awaiting this year’s SSLC results due soon, Anand Mishra is planning to join
the Birla Institute of Technology at Pilani, Rajasthan to pursue his dream of
training in electronics and communication. He is just two months short of his
18th birthday when the good news came through.
Deitilang Syiem from St Anthony's Higher Secondary School,
who secured second position in the Science stream is the topper among the
candidates from indigenous tribes. She secured 443 marks with distinction in
English, Khasi (MIL), Computer Application, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
She is the daughter of P Syiem and BL Marwein and a resident of Langkyrding.
"I kept a specific target and worked hard to achieve it.
I thank God for such a great achievement," Deiti said. Underlining
importance of hard work, she said, "At the end of the day, it's about our
life and future and not of our parents or teachers."
The Commerce stream topper, Parul Amin Laskar, who is
currently in Silchar, Assam told The Shillong Times over phone that he
never expected to top the examination. "I had a little fear about the
papers on Business Studies and Economics," he said, "I am excited that
I got the highest marks in Business Studies."
"It's the time of my life, I can't wait to come to
Shillong and thank my teachers who have helped me in pursuing this goal,"
he said. Parul, who secured 436 marks with distinction in as many as four
subjects, is the son of SR Laskar and HB Laskar and at present he stays with his
uncle SH Mazumdar at East Laban Road.
This year’s HSSLC results were once again a clean sweep for
St. Anthony’s HS School, Shillong, that has been excelling in this field for
the last few years. The school bagged as many as 14 ranks in the HSSLC
examination in Science and Commerce streams.
The school produced eight toppers in the Science stream while
six in the Commerce stream and at the same time recorded highest percentage of
successful candidates, 96 per cent, in the Science stream.
The highest pass percentage in the Commerce stream is
recorded by Alpha English Higher Secondary School, Nongpoh and St Margareth's
Higher Secondary School, Shillong.
Coincidently, both institutions, St. Anthony’s and Don Bosco College, Tura,
are run by the Salesian congregation of the Roman Catholic Church.LIST OF TOPPERS
